How to Travel to Koh Lipe from Malaysia

Are you planning a tropical escape to the pristine shores of Koh Lipe? This guide explains the main ways to travel from Malaysia to Koh Lipe, including ferries, flights, private cars, buses, and trains.

Koh Lipe is a small island in southern Thailand, often referred to as the “Maldives of Thailand.” It is famous for its white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise water, beautiful coral reefs, and relaxed island atmosphere.

If you are travelling from Kuala Lumpur or other parts of Malaysia, there are several ways to reach Koh Lipe, depending on the season and your preferred mode of transport.

1. Travelling by Ferry from Langkawi

If you are travelling from Langkawi, taking a direct ferry to Koh Lipe is one of the most convenient options during the operating season.

The ferry journey usually takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, although travel time may vary depending on weather, sea conditions, and immigration procedures.

Passengers travelling from Kuah Jetty should arrive early to complete the check-in and immigration process.

Check-in Counter:
Level 1 – Lot 1, Jetty Point 07000 Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia

After completing your online booking, please present your e-voucher at the counter to redeem your physical ferry ticket.

Important: Passengers are required to arrive at the check-in counter at least 2 hours before the scheduled departure time to allow sufficient time for ticket collection, immigration, and boarding procedures.

Please note that Malaysia is one hour ahead of Thailand.

Upon arrival at Koh Lipe, passengers must complete Thai immigration procedures at Pattaya Beach before entering Thailand.

Depending on the ferry operator and sea conditions, passengers may be transferred from the ferry to the shore by a local long-tail boat.

2. Travelling via Hat Yai International Airport

Hat Yai International Airport is one of the most convenient gateways for travellers coming from Malaysia.

Direct flights are available from Kuala Lumpur to Hat Yai, and the flight takes approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes.

If you book your transfer with Hi Lipe, our driver will meet you at Hat Yai International Airport, assist you with your luggage, and take you by air-conditioned van to Pak Bara Pier in Satun Province.

The journey from Hat Yai International Airport to Pak Bara Pier normally takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

Upon arrival at Pak Bara Pier, our Hi Lipe staff will assist you with the speedboat check-in process.

Passengers should prepare cash for the applicable local fees.

Pak Bara Pier Fee: THB 20 per person
Tarutao National Park Entrance Fee:
Thai nationals: THB 40 per person
Foreign visitors: THB 200 per person

After check-in, you will continue your journey to Koh Lipe by speedboat.

The speedboat journey usually takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the season, weather conditions, and any scheduled sightseeing stops.

3. Travelling by Private Car

Travelling by private car is another convenient option for visitors from Malaysia, especially those travelling from Perlis, Kedah, Penang, or other northern areas.

There are several Malaysia–Thailand border crossings.

Two commonly used border checkpoints are:

Bukit Kayu Hitam – Sadao Border Checkpoint

This route is convenient for travellers heading towards Hat Yai before continuing to Satun and Pak Bara Pier.

Wang Kelian – Wang Prachan Border Checkpoint

This route is particularly convenient for travellers coming from Perlis because it enters directly into Satun Province.

After crossing the border into Thailand, continue by road to Pak Bara Pier.

From Pak Bara Pier, you can take a speedboat to Koh Lipe.

We recommend allowing sufficient time for immigration, border procedures, traffic, parking, and speedboat check-in.

4. Travelling by Bus or Train to Hat Yai

You can also travel from Malaysia to Hat Yai by bus or train.

Hat Yai is one of the main transport hubs in southern Thailand and is well connected to several cities in Malaysia.

After arriving in Hat Yai, continue your journey by shared or private van to Pak Bara Pier, followed by a speedboat to Koh Lipe.

When planning this route, make sure that your bus or train arrives early enough to connect with your selected van and speedboat departure.

If your arrival time is too late for the final speedboat of the day, we recommend staying overnight in Hat Yai or Pak Bara and travelling to Koh Lipe the following morning.
